More than 260,000 American collegians study abroad each year, and these numbers are rising. The vast majority of students opt to study in Western Europe or Australia. A stalwart minority, however, enrolls in programs far off this well-beaten track. Study abroad institutions like SIT and The School for Field Studies offer opportunities in countries as far-flung as Cameroon, Jordan, Kenya, and Mongolia.
The academic and personal rewards of stepping outside your cultural comfort zone by studying in the developing world can be immense. Still, these programs present problems not encountered by students spending a term in the Western world, not least of which is the challenge of staying healthy.
