It’s a dirty job but someone has to do it. The job, of course, is researching history. While it may not be exactly blue collar, it’s not really white collar either, but a crossbreed, a mongrel if you will, of both. Borrowing from the title of the book written by “the dean of science fiction writers”, Robert A. Heinlein, [1907-1988], the mid-sixties classic, The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, three of the harshest earthbound mistresses are the National Archives and Records Administration [NARA] the Library of Congress [LOC] and The New York Times Archive [NYTA].
TANSTAAFL, Heinlein’s acronym, which is an abbreviation of “There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch", the 1930s phrase used by newspaper journalists during the Great Depression era, and a favorite expression of the American economist, Milton Friedman [1912-2006], is an appropriate idiom to utilize when describing one of the primary prerequisites of a researcher, with another requisite being, a plethora of patience. In other words, research takes time, a lot of it.
Another requirement of an academic, that of it being de rigueur to wear two hats, was summed up by the 12th Librarian of Congress Daniel Joseph Boorstin [1914-2004] who said: “The historian is both discoverer and creator”, but it was the Latin-speaking philosopher and theologian, Saint Augustine of Hippo [354-430] whose Credo quia impossibilia (“I believe because it is impossible”) still serves as a statement of principle that’s practiced by scholars (after all, practice makes perfect). However, more recently, James Hadley Billington, the 13th Librarian of Congress, reminded researchers of yet one more responsibility when he stated: “Historic, handwritten documents reveal clues about the past that word processors cannot illuminate”.
